Grand Rapids event to showcase Black-owned small businesses

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (WOOD) – The holiday shopping season officially begins with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.

A special Saturday afternoon event in Grand Rapids features gifts and services from Black-owned companies.

Tiesha Hogue, organizer and business owner, hopes buyers will consider helping businesses that sometimes visit the. be overlooked Small Business Saturday Black Vendor Showcase.

“In this community, it’s really important that we share our networks and our money with minority-owned companies,” said Hogue.

Aleka C. Thrash’s business, Wrapped in ACT, sells a range of headwraps that were popular during the pandemic as more people worked from home. She is also the organizer of the event and is happy about the presentation of her products.

“As a woman of color, it’s very hard not just to get money, to get people to recognize you and just for people to see the talent out there,” said Thrash.

The event will also promote literacy through tales with Black Santa Claus.

“We want kids to experience Santa Claus who looks like them, who is happy and reads to them,” said Thrash.

Thrash says surviving a pandemic is a particular challenge for small businesses, such as dealing with the backlog in the supply chain.

“I actually had to pause my business a little. I’m still selling, I’m still out there, but the way it was originally set up, in order to be able to sell continuously, I had to switch to some sort of drop model, which basically means that as soon as I have items available, I will , let people know they are buying, “said Thrash.

As companies try to get back to some normalcy, they hope events like this will help them move forward.

Communities encourage people to come out on Small Business Saturday

“Last year there was a lot of public hesitation. This year, as I know that more and more people are being vaccinated and that wearing our mask is really a given, I am very confident that the result will be greater than what we had last year, ”said Hogue.

The event will take place on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Linc Gallery, which is located in 1167 Madison Avenue. SE near Hall Street in Grand Rapids. Santa Claus will be at the event from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
