Block party for teenagers in Lansing aims to improve the community

LANSING, me. (WILX) – A youth block party in Lansing is more than just a good time for kids, it’s an important event for the entire community.

The event took place on Thursday at The Fledge, which is located near the intersection of Eureka and Holmes streets.

According to the host, the event was designed to teach teenagers how to positively spend their time in the community. The event comes after mid-Michigan teenage violence skyrocketed.

Organizer Maranda Houston said that as a parent, she wants her own teens to be part of the answer, not the problem.

“I love my children, but all children are our future. I’m definitely into kids and just want to make sure they have a good foundation to start with. So that’s what we’re doing in our organization, ”Houston said. “In a way, my children are the answer, but it’s also my personal motivation and passion.”

The event runs until Thursday 10pm and includes motivational speakers, dance, handicrafts, giveaways, and more.
