The Catholic von Lansing falls in Pewamo-Westphalia
WESTPHALIA, Michigan (WILX) – It’s week nine of high school football season and the final night of the regular season with the playoffs approaching next week. Friday in our game of the week: Two undefeated teams and two of the really great programs in our area. Lansing Catholic in Pewamo-Westphalia, and the fans were on fire!
PW was leading 6-0 starting in the third when Lansing Catholic’s Joey Baker looked across the middle and tried to find an open cougar. He discovered Alex Watters. Watters took the forty-five feet to the house and gave the Cougar student department a nice thumbs up on the way. Pumas rise 7-6.
Then Pirates quarterback Troy Wertman himself took it in the middle for a three-yard touchdown. 12-7, and that’s where the score would stay.
PW finished his regular season perfectly, 12-7 against Lansing Catholic. That’s 100 wins in the last nine seasons for head coach Jeremy Miller.
“It feels great but it’s just testament to the players and coaches I’ve had over the years,” said Miller. “I was just so lucky. It’s something special for me, but most of all I’m just happy about the program. “
Miller is as selfless as it gets, according to his players. That’s how quarterback Troy Werkman describes him.
“There is just something about him. He unites everyone, all together as a team, ”said Werkman. “We can all work on that together.”
Miller knew this game would bring some challenges as his team had been busy with it all year. Countless injuries but he knew his team could handle them and end a perfect season.
“That was a great game for us because we knew there would be some adversity as the game progressed,” said Miller. “I wanted to see how this team would react. We lost so many people who took leadership roles on this team. To see how they react to this and to these adversities in these situations is great proof of their character. “
