Semiconductor shortages will cripple GM Flint Meeting, Lansing Delta Twp. Plants next week

FLINT, MI – Global semiconductor shortages will hit two General Motors Michigan plants next week, stop production at Flint Assembly and keep Lansing Delta Township Assembly idle for a fourth straight week.

GM said in a statement on Tuesday, August 3, that its trucking plants in Flint; Silão, Mexico; and Fort Wayne, Ind., will cease production the week of August 9th and resume full production on August 16th.

GM’s Delta Township factory, where the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave are built, will also remain closed for the week of August 9th. This factory has been offline since July 19th.

The recent announcement of downtime is not the first time GM plants in Flint have experienced supply chain issues.

Earlier this year, Flint Engine Operations laid off 160 employees because a GM assembly plant in Ontario, Canada that uses Flint-built engines was also shut down due to semiconductor shortages.

GM said in a statement that “the global semiconductor scarcity remains complex and very fluid”.

“GM’s global purchasing and supply chain, development and manufacturing teams continue to find creative solutions and work with the supply base to reduce the impact on our most demanded and limited vehicles, including full-size trucks and SUVs, for our customers. to minimize ”, it says in the statement.

“The latest schedule adjustments were caused by temporary parts shortages caused by semiconductor supply bottlenecks in international markets with COVID-19-related restrictions. This period gives us the opportunity to complete unfinished vehicles in the affected assembly plants and deliver these units to dealers in order to meet the strong customer demand for our products. “

GM has made it a priority to maintain factories that make profitable full-size pickup trucks and SUVs to address the semiconductor shortage.

In June, the company announced it would hire 450 additional employees at Flint Assembly after promising to increase shipments of Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD full-size pickups built at the plant, the city’s only remaining vehicle assembly plant become.

Flint Assembly, which employs approximately 5,400 hourly and salary workers, was built on 159 acres on Van Slyke Road in 1947. It is adjacent to Flint Engine Operations and less than 2 miles from the Flint Metal Center, the last concentration of auto plants in town.
