Officer killed, suspect wounded in Dallas-area shooting | Nation/World News

MESQUITE, Texas (AP) – A police officer died and a suspect was injured in a shooting outside a supermarket in suburban Dallas on Friday, authorities said.

It happened outside an Albertson supermarket in Mesquite around 1:40 p.m., Police Chief David Gill said. The officer responded to a report of a disturbance in the store’s parking lot when the suspect drew a gun and opened fire and hit the officer twice, he said. The officer returned fire and injured the suspect once.

Both were rushed to a Dallas hospital in critical condition, where the officer died, Gill said. The suspect was treated in the hospital. Gill said he didn’t know his current condition.

No identities were released, but Gill said the officer killed was a 21-year-old law enforcement veteran.
