Mikromarkt comes to downtown Lansing
LANSING, Michigan – A new micro-store is located in a vacant building in downtown Lansing. The area is to be used to promote local businesses in the community.
“As with all retail stores, our downtown pedestrian traffic has shifted. So we focused on making sure that the downtown emergency filled the vacancies, ”said Julie Reinhardt, director of downtown Lansing Inc. development.
To address this issue, Downtown Lansing Inc. relocated its office to the heart of downtown and turned the front half into a retail innovation hub.
They call it the Middle Village Micro Market.
“For the Christmas season we filled it with vendors to give the people of Lansing a fun place to shop, to bring the traffic to the city center,” said Reinhardt.
One of the dealers taking the vacation opportunity is a bookseller called A Novel Concept.
“The Middle Village room allows us that middle ground of getting a lot of mentoring from some really fantastic women, business owners who are kind of mentors to us and can show us how to do it, and provide a kind of community in which to learn, before we actually do it, implement all of the things we need to do to realize our own physical space, “said co-creator Christine Bennett.
Middle Village will launch a year-long business program in the spring.
“An entrepreneur can come to us and we give him business programs,” said Reinhardt. “We’re going to give them financial support. We’re going to give them about 10 by 10 feet of space where we want them to create a permanent storefront for the year.”
The program runs from March to December 22nd next year.
