Fire damages Steeltech Limited building in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, me. (WOOD) – Investigators in Grand Rapids are trying to determine the cause of a fire that has damaged a Steeltech Limited building.

Crews from the Grand Rapids Fire Department were called to the fire at around 1 a.m. Friday on the 1200 block of Phillips Avenue near Hall Street and Buchanan Avenue SW. When they arrived, flames shot through the roof of the building.

About 40 firefighters on site when News 8 arrived, got the fire under control in about an hour. Some nearby buildings that were used to house chemicals were on fire but were ultimately not damaged.

While the firefighters were fighting the fire, a power pole fell. GRFD contacted Consumers Energy to cut power to nearby electrical lines near the fire that posed a threat to the fire department.

Nobody was injured in the fire and GRFD battalion chief Eric Freeman said the building was empty.
