Chippewa Hills softball player concludes strong summer season
REMUS – Hailey Maeder’s summer in Chippewa Hills was a productive one.
Maeder was one of three Chippewa girls who played on the Traverse City Thunder 14U travel team trained by Chippewa Hills varsity skipper DJ Newman. The others are Erin Riesenburg and Ella Newman, who will be newbies in softball spring 2022. The other two girls will be high school freshmen in the spring of 2023.
Most of the girls were from the Traverse City area.
This was Maeder’s first year on the team.
“I had a trial session with the team and then I did it,” she said.
Maeder played right field and occasionally set up for the team that ended the season with a 9-8-2 record.
Usually the exercises were done in Kingsley. Tournaments were held every weekend.
“We were competitive and a good team,” said Maeder, adding that it was perhaps the most competitive team she was on softball in her six years.
Her stroke was strong, especially in the last two tournaments, Maeder said.
“The key is to have confidence in yourself,” she said.
As a right outfield player, Maeder’s defensive skills were solid.
She will play junior high volleyball and basketball but will try different softball teams in the fall and said she will take the best offer.
