UM graduate buys Ann Arbor car dealerships

Former dealer group president Michael Speigl bought his first dealerships on September 1st when he acquired Dunning Subaru and Dunning Toyota in Ann Arbor.

Speigl bought the dealerships from retired dealer Julie Dunning after they were introduced by a mutual friend, Speigl said. The stores were renamed Subaru of Ann Arbor and Toyota of Ann Arbor.

The Dunning family owned the Toyota store since 1970 and the Subaru dealer since 1986.

“To have the opportunity to buy Toyota [and] Family owned Subaru of Ann Arbor for 50 years in a place we care about was just too much to pass up, “said Speigl.

Speigl was most recently Group Vice President at the public retailer Lithia Motors Inc. In 2019, Lithia acquired the Tampa-based Williams Automotive Group, of which Speigl was President.

For Speigl, who moved to Ann Arbor with his family, buying and moving north is a kind of homecoming. Speigl is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of the University of Michigan. Speigl said he has returned to Ann Arbor frequently over the summer and for UM soccer and basketball games.
