Opening On NMC Board After Estes Resigns

By Beth Milligan | October 20, 2021

Northwestern Michigan College is accepting applications for an open position on its board of trustees after curator Michael Estes stepped down, effective Sunday.

Estes did not provide a reason for his resignation, but had missed meetings for about a year in protest at Zoom’s NMC board members meeting during the pandemic. NMC returned to face-to-face meetings starting this summer, although meeting minutes show Estes continued to miss meetings. In addition to his work on the board of directors, Estes served on the NMC’s Building and Site, Barbecue, Fellows Nominating and Policy committees as well as on the Board of Trustees. Estes was elected to the board in 2016.

State law requires the NMC board to appoint a replacement trustee within 30 days. That person will serve for the remainder of Estes’ term through the next election in November 2022. Registered Grand Traverse County voters are eligible to apply for the position.

The obligations for the unpaid trustee position include:
> Regular board meeting, usually on the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
> Board study meetings and committee meetings scheduled as needed
> Annual board retreat – sometimes overnight
> Participation in other college functions such as commencement, receptions, ceremonies, events
> Travel regularly for purposes of professional development and to represent the teaching staff at various regional and regional association meetings. The trustee’s travel expenses are paid by NMC.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest and materials explaining their qualifications for the position by 5:00 PM on November 3. They can be submitted online, emailed to [email protected], or sent or delivered to:
