Several traffic lights out around Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, me. (WOOD) – An issue at a substation resulted in several traffic lights going dark in Grand Rapids.

Drivers are advised to treat intersections with a failure as four-way stops.

A city spokesman said the problem, which began around 9:45 a.m. on Monday, was due to two blown fuses at the Consumers Energy Coldbrook substation on Leonard Street and Monroe Avenue. The spokesman said a squirrel may be responsible for causing the problem.

The Coldbrook substation feeds traffic lights and city parks, parking lots and other urban real estate.

The crews are working to bring the lights back online. That could take two hours.

Instructions on how to deal with a dark traffic light that had previously been a bit confusing was in Michigan cleared in 2018 with a law requiring them to be treated as an all-way stop.
