More than 2,000 people hit the streets for Grand Rapids Marathon

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (WOOD) – The Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon returned in person on Sunday morning after going virtual last year.

More than 2,000 people from across West Michigan and across the country attended the event, which included a half marathon, marathon, and marathon relay.

“We’re so excited. This is the first major endurance race in Grand Rapids since we hosted it two years ago. Everything else had to be virtual, ”says Marathon Director Don Kern, who co-founded the event 18 years ago. “It’s a beautiful day. I have a lot of people out here who are overturning their goals and trying to make things happen, and it was just a wonderful experience to make that happen live and in person.”

Dylan Sykes, 23, of Flagstaff, Arizona, finished the marathon first in just under 2 hours and 29 minutes. You can find the full race results here.

“The most inspirational thing in the world is over there at the finish line when people have run 42 miles,” Kern said. “It’s emotional; You will not go without tears in your eyes. ”
