Military Vets Can Now Convert Active Sea Service Credit Towards Bachelor’s Degree

Big news from Northwestern Michigan College’s Maritime Academy in Traverse City: It’s giving veterans a head start.

Military veterans can now convert active sea service towards a Bachelor’s degree as an engineer officer.

Approval came last Thursday and means more engineering graduate degrees are coming soon to help the merchant shipping industry.

“There are only 6-8 maritime academies in the country. There’s New York, Boston, San Francisco, and one in Traverse City. If you’re even thinking of going back to college and you’re interested, give us a call and we’ll take a tour of the academy. It’s a great resource, ”said Gerard Achenbach, superintendent of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy.

The program is valid until 2026 and the university plans to expand it even further.
