Grand Rapids ranks 17th among ‘Best Foodie Cities’ in US

A new report ranks Grand Rapids among the top 20 cities in America for foodies.

WalletHub personal finance website released its report on Best Foodie Cities in America in 2021 on Monday, October 4th, and Grand Rapids was ranked 17th.

“Americans today use the term ‘foodie’ to refer to anyone who loves gourmet food. But the foodie culture is not limited to restaurants, ”wrote Adam McCann in the report. “… Culinary hotspots in the US offer many affordable options for foodies on a tight budget. These wallet-friendly cities cater to guests who prefer to cook at home, explore the local flavors, or both. “

To identify the best and cheapest local foodie scenes, WalletHub compared 182 of the largest US cities based on 29 key metrics. The dataset included food costs, the affordability and accessibility of high quality restaurants, food festivals per capita, and artisanal breweries and wineries per capita.

The foodie friendliness metrics that Grand Rapids scored on, with 1 being the best and 91 being the average rating, included:

  • Average beer and wine price: 10th place
  • Restaurants per capita: 62.
  • Affordability and Accessibility of Highly Rated Restaurants: 82.
  • Gourmet shops per capita: 40.
  • Craft breweries and wineries per capita: 16.
  • Coffee and tea shops per capita: 41.
  • Number of grocery stores per capita: 62.
  • Percentage of residents who are fully vaccinated: 91.
