Grand Rapids lab develops at-home respiratory infection testing kit and service

The AR41 kit can test for 41 different respiratory pathogens, including COVID, RSV, and influenza.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – As COVID cases rise, doctors are looking for ways to monitor people from their homes. You have succeeded with a unique breath test kit developed in West Michigan.

Arctic Molecular, a Grand Rapids-based laboratory at 801 Broadway Ave. NW, has developed an FDA cleared home PCR test kit.

It’s a painless smear on the nose, with a 24-hour earnings turnaround.

The AR41 kit can test for 41 different respiratory pathogens, including COVID, RSV, and influenza, which are the largest number on the market right now, according to their website.

The kit can also tell patients whether or not they need antibiotics.

The lab’s medical director said this wide range of pathogens reduced the likelihood of negative or inconclusive test results.

He adds that it really is a service for doctors who prefer to keep infectious patients at home.

“When a doctor was concerned about a patient call, we would send someone home from our lab,” said Dr. Brent Zanke, CEO of Arctic Medical Labs. “We would take the sample and bring it back to the lab, do the analysis, and then give the results to the doctor. The doctor would conduct a telemedicine session with the patient and protect the patient from infecting others.”

The kit and service were developed this summer and launched on Friday October 1st.

The lab has worked with major hospitals in Grand Rapids and Dr. Zanke said that 12 patients have used the service so far.

“What we really need is that people know it’s out there,” he said. “We think we should be doing hundreds of tests every month.”

Most insurance companies cover the program.
