Downtown bookstores are participating in the first Lansing Book Crawl

LANSING, Michigan – Bookstores in Downtown Lansing and REO Town came together on Saturday for the city’s first book tour.

“It started with the fact that there has been a huge boom in indie bookstores down Washington Avenue for the past year or so,” said Casey Holland, co-owner of Wayfaring Booksellers.

She and other independent bookstore owners in the area have seen an influx of new stores over the past year.

“So we all realized that this was such an era as such a huge boom in indie bookstores,” she said. “Why don’t we all do something to support each other and have this big event to encourage people to attend all of these? really unique and great stores? “

There are six stops on the Washington Avenue book tour, such as the Socialight Society owned by Nyshell Lawrence.

“The pedestrian traffic was amazing, we started at 11am, but there were actually people walking in at 10am by then … It was really fun to see everyone go from store to store,” said Lawrence.

The participants in the book crawl collected pins in each of the participating bookstores; A novel concept, Deadtime Stories, Socialight Society, Summit Comics and Games, The Robin Books and Wayfaring Booksellers.

“You can get this pin either by making purchases or by buying the pin for a dollar, and when you’ve collected them you can get a limited edition tote bag that contains all of the stores that are participating today,” said Lawrence.

Adriana Wagner, who went on the book tour with her mother Gretchen, says the crawl was a fun way for her to get into bookstores she’d never been to before.

“I only really know Deadtime Stories, I spend a lot of time in Reotown, but it just looked really cute,” she said.

Dylan Rogers, co-owner of The Robin Books, told me the store saw more than 500 visitors during the crawl. He calls Lansing’s very first book tour a “crazy success”.
