Michigan Football ranked 2nd in last CFP ballot, will face 3rd Georgia in the Orange Bowl semifinals

ANN ARBOR, me. – Michigan ranks # 2 in the final college football playoff rankings and will play # 3 Georgia in the Orange Bowl semifinals.

The Orange Bowl is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. on December 31st.

The Wolverines come out in the Big Ten championship game 42-3 drubbing from No. 13 Iowa. Combined with the dominant 42:27 win over Ohio State the week before, Jim Harbaugh’s team ended the season with a bang.

Georgia, like Michigan, went 12-1 this season. The Bulldogs spent most of the year ranked # 1 in every major poll until they lost to Alabama in the SEC championship game on Saturday.

While the résumé is highlighted by victories against Clemson and Arkansas, Georgia’s most formidable trait this season has been her sheer defensive dominance. Prior to the Alabama game, the Bulldogs averaged less than seven allowed points per game.

Georgia defeated a very good Arkansas team 37-0 and two solid SEC East teams – Kentucky and Tennessee – with a total of 71-30.

There is no question Georgia is one of the best teams in the country.

Michigan also earned its place in this category. Before beating Ohio State and Iowa by a total of 84-30, the Wolverines had impressive road wins in Wisconsin and Penn State, beating decent teams like Northern Illinois and Maryland with 53 and 41 points respectively.

These two programs have met twice: a 26-0 win in Michigan in 1957 and a 15-7 win in Georgia in 1965. Both games were played in Ann Arbor.

Michigan will be a healthy underdog when the two teams clash in Miami on December 31st. The Orange Bowl winner plays in the Indianapolis National Championship against the Cotton Bowl winner – No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Cincinnati.
