Best Ice Cream in Ann Arbor: Blank Slate Creamery

The Michigan Daily’s annual Best of Ann Arbor poll, ranked the best ice cream for four years in a row, has seen Blank Slate dairy become a staple of the community since it opened in 2014. Blank Slate, a family business, makes all of their ice cream from scratch using all natural ingredients.

No wonder there are usually a number of flavors around the building that Blank Slate offers. Some are funky, like blueberry pancakes or mint matcha, and others are good old classics like green mint chips or cookies and cream. The employees at Blank Slate not only offer dairy-free and vegan ice cream, but also bake their own fresh waffle cones every day.

Like many companies, Blank Slate had to adapt and find new ways to continue serving the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. They converted their shop front into a take-away window where customers can order from outside the building or order online and then take their ice cream with them. Hopefully in the future customers will be able to re-enter the store and smell the fresh waffle cones while leaving a message on the blackboards on the walls.

Owner and UM alum Janice Sigler said she was honored that Blank Slate Creamery was a part of student life, adding that the university was an integral part of the vitality of their business.

“It is a special honor for us when the students choose us for the best ice cream,” said Sigler. “We really appreciate that and are happy to be a part of the community, and we are also very happy that the students go as far as they do to get an ice cream.”
