Detroit Tigers: Non-Call Candidates 2021
For building the Detroit Tigers 2022 roster, here are the eight dates to remember as we approach late October.
Last night’s nighttime temperatures plummeted 30 degrees in Metro Detroit as the Atlanta Braves made their first World Series appearance since 1999. The wintry conditions shook me up to remind everyone that there are seven dates for the Detroit Tigers, or any baseball fan, to remember for the off-season.
November 9th: Manager of the Year
In the American League, it will most likely go to Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, though it would be great if AJ Hinch got a vote or two.
November 10: Qualifying offers
Here, players get a one-year offer, and if they canceled, they’d do it for $ 18.4 million. If the player declines, the team will receive a draft pick from the team that signed the player. The Tigers have no one who fits into that category.
November 15: Announcement of the Hall of Fame
Until Miguel Cabrera retires or, hopefully, Lou Whitaker joins the Modern Baseball vote in 2023, that will be the day Major League Baseball will announce who will be anchored in Cooperstown.
November 19: 40-man squad
This is key as the Tigers have some decisions to make about who will return in 2022 and who will claim a 40-man seat in the minor league system.
December 1st – Non-Tender Day
New contributor Allen wrote a few days ago about the tigers that are eligible for non-tendering. He’s presented some really good cases for every player, so we’ll see which way the front office is going here.
The same day the collective agreement ends, and this is where the rubber hits the streets as the MLBPA and the owners try to come up with some sort of labor peace.
5-9 December: Winter meeting in San Diego
Oh yes, the MLB winter get-together. Whether you remember the Randy Smith era or the tenure of Dave Dombrowski, it has always been an adventure. It is also when the Rule 5 draft takes place. Depending on who stays out to draft, the Tigers may or may not participate.
January 14th: Arbitration talks
This is the deadline for the front office to discuss numbers with the players who are entitled to arbitrate. Here is the list of players for Detroit as per the data on FanGraphs:

RHP Michael Fulmer
RHP Joe Jimenez
RHP-Jose Cisnero
INF-Jeimer Candelario
