3 area teams in regional action tonight | Information, Sports activities, Jobs

ALPENA — With the dust settled after an exciting week of district play, three girls basketball teams are left standing. Those three teams – Alpena, Posen, and Hillman – begin their quest for a regional championship tonight in a trio of matchups.

Alpena will play Midland Dow in Gaylord at 7 pm, Posen will play Harbor Light in Rogers City at 7 pm, and Hillman will play Saginaw Nouvel at Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart at 5:30 pm

Alpena (14-9) won its first district title since 2001 last week, topping Traverse City Central in a thriller. Now the Wildcats turn their attention to a regional semifinal matchup with Midland Dow.

The Chargers (21-1) won’t be an easy out. Fourth-ranked Dow is coming off a run to the Division 1 semifinals last year and their lone loss this season came in January in overtime.

Hillman (14-7) is back in the regional tournament for the first time since 2019 after a district final win over Atlanta on Friday. Saginaw Nouvel (19-3) lost three of its first four games, but has rolled since then, winning 18 straight games heading into tonight’s matchup. With a balanced scoring attack, the Tigers hope to advance to the regional final for the first time since 2015.

Posen (20-1) wrapped up a third consecutive district title last week with a win over Inland Lakes. Now the Vikings are looking to get over the regional hump for the first time since 2014. Since making the quarterfinals in 2014, the Vikings have gone 0-3 in regional semifinal matchups.

Harbor Light (13-7) is coming off a dramatic district final win over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian; a win that gave the Swordsmen their first district title since the 2017-18 season.
