Veterans remembered in Grand Rapids with grave markers

GRAND RAPIDS, me. (WOOD) – A group of veterans spent the morning remembering thousands of their fellow soldiers.

Woodlawn Cemetery in Grand Rapids is now adorned with American flags in the latest act in a decade-long tradition.

On this day 76 years ago – May 8, 1945 – the world celebrated the fall of National Socialist Germany. This was made possible in part by American victims.

Today those at Woodlawn Cemetery honor the sacrifices of our veterans of all generations.

“Spanish-American, World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and even some people-golf,” said Cliff Mulder, a navy veteran.

The Claude Lambert Memorial Flag Placing lasted 50 years and more than 2,100 gravestones were honored this year.

“This was canceled last year,” Mulder said. “So it’s a heartfelt thing to get out and the camaraderie among us to be able to do this at all.”

American Legion Post 258 sums it all up and the group hopes others can think about the price the service members paid.

“We are reminded that veterans are there and what veterans have done in the past [us]”Mulder said.” And I think a lot of that matters to the younger generation as well. “
