SOFTBALL: Lumberjacks earn 1st win, split in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS – The Bemidji High School softball team celebrated their first win of the season against Hermantown on Saturday and prevailed 8-7 in a neutral game at Grand Rapids. The Lumberjacks (1-4) hosted Grand Rapids 10-5 later in the day.

Elizabeth Oster scored 2-2 and drove in the opening win in three races with a double and a triple for BHS. Their triple in the second inning gave the Jacks a 3-1 lead.

The Hawks (3-2) responded with one run in the fifth and four in the sixth to regain a 6-3 advantage.

Four consecutive hits from Hannah Alexander, Taylor Waukazo, Oster and Lindsey Nelson contributed to a five breakout in the sixth inning to finally put Bemidji on the top.

Waukazo took the overall win, scoring three hits, while allowing seven runs with six hits and three runs.

Jody Pemberton scored a mistake in the first inning of game two, but Grand Rapids responded with two runs in the lower half of the frame and rose 2-1.

After two innings 9: 1 behind, Oster hit a grand slam in the third to reduce the deficit to 9: 5. However, the Thunderhawks (6-4) held for the 10-5 win.

Oster finished the game 2: 3 and led the team on the plate.

Lexie Tatro received the loss after throwing six innings while hitting five and walking three.

Bemidji will return home to Sartell-St. Stephen in a double header on Tuesday April 27th at 4pm.
