Schmidt Honored By School Counselors For Work On Budget

Senator Wayne Schmidt was named Legislator of the Year Tuesday by the Michigan School Counselors Association (MSCA).

Schmidt received the award in recognition of his consistent support not only of Michigan K-12 schools, including those in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, but also for his persistent support to school counselors and student mental health.

“This has been a historic budget season for Michigan’s K-12 schools,” said Schmidt, R-Traverse City, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on K-12 and the Department of Education. “The government-signed budget is finally leveling the way across the state and working to meet the special needs of schools as a result of the pandemic. This also includes funding to hire and retain school counselors and psychologists to support our students. “

Schmidt added that he is grateful for the recognition and looks forward to continuing to work with MSCA members to allocate more resources to the success of students in schools across the state.

“I would like to thank the Michigan School Counselors Association for this award. It is an honor to be recognized as an attorney for our students, ”said Schmidt. “I have been a long-time supporter of school counselors and advocate their role in student success – and I will continue to do so.”
