MCC cheer second at Grand Rapids invite |

GRAND RAPIDS – Mason County Central’s competitive cheerleading team finished second in a three-team invitation hosted by Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian on Saturday. The Spartans scored 641 points while hosts NorthPointe Christian scored 656.4 points. Leslie was third with 605.28 points. “We had our best results so far in round 1 and round 2,” said central coach Cheri Stibitz. “We had a couple of things that didn’t go as planned in Round 3. Things didn’t go as well as usual … We made a lot of changes in our second round and that was lucrative for us.” Two Spartans have been in close contact with COVID-19 and are expected to return this week. Central will train ahead of the postseason coming later this week. ice Hockey

Saginaw Heritage 10, Lakeshore 1

VICTORY TWP. – Lakeshore’s co-op ice hockey team struggled to score all season and advanced to the playoffs after scoring just one goal in their last two competitions. The last was a 10-1 loss to Saginaw Heritage at the West Shore Community Ice Arena in Victory Township on Saturday in a game that wasn’t on the agenda until the last minute. Mount Pleasant was canceled early last week, and the Badgers (1-12) had to mix up to find a replacement. Heritage came into play with a bigger and more talented squad – it’s number 5 in Division 1 of the state coaches association – and the Badgers have been dealing with it from the start. Heritage put pressure on the Badgers’ net, firing Lakeshore goalkeeper Alex Shriver with a series of shots in the air. “It will sound crazy, but we could probably have scored three or four goals in total,” said Lakeshore coach Bill Shriver. “We hit the bar three times. “We scored our goal on our power play and we had multiple even strength options and we had multiple power play options because they had three penalties out of four. “This is a team that I don’t know if they will fight for a national championship, but they are solid from top to bottom. We hung out there. We asserted what they had and what we had. “Evan McCarthy scored the Badgers’ only goal, with Russell Schade and Jake Lamm each receiving an assist. But the Badgers sniffed at a couple of wide-open shots that would have propelled the game into the third period. Lakeshore is now preparing for its playoff game against Traverse City Central in Traverse City on Wednesday. Wrestling

Allendale Quad

ALLENDALE – The Mason County Central wrestling team ended the regular season with a double on Friday in Allendale against Zeeland East, Howard City Tri-County and the hosts, the Falcons. The Spartans dropped all three, but coach Kendall Trim saw the games as a good stepping stone for this week’s playoffs. “We saw several high-profile wrestlers this Friday and I think we are wrestling at a level that should lead to individual success in the postseason,” said Trim. Andrew McQuinn will set a 25-2 post-season record after 3-0 on Friday. Zane McCabe, a 119-pound freshman, went 2-1 and improved to 15-12 for the season. Carter Hirshfeld, a 145-pound junior, took a win for a 22-5 record. Ethan Wood (14-13), a junior and freshman 112-pounder Aiden Hirschfeld, won each. “We had good competitions all season and the guys worked really hard,” said Trim. “I think we did the job to be successful in this first week of the postseason. We did everything we can. “Now we have to go out and perform next week and I’m confident our wrestlers are up for the challenge this week.”
