Man dies in 3-car crash after SUV stalls on I-94 in Detroit

DETROIT – A man died Saturday after a three car accident that occurred on the west side of Detroit after an SUV broke down on the freeway.

Officials said there was a collision of multiple vehicles on I-94 heading west near Lonyo Street in Detroit at around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday.

Michigan State Police say GMC terrain collapsed on the freeway and blocked the right lane. A semi-trailer allegedly managed to stop before hitting the SUV.

According to police, however, the driver of a Jeep Wrangler was unable to stop in time and hit the rear of the semi-trailer, which then hit the SUV. The driver of the jeep, a 34-year-old man, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to the police, he was not buckled up at the time of the accident.

During their investigation, MSP discovered that the GMC terrain was a stolen vehicle. Witnesses told police that they saw two people run out of the SUV after the accident. The authorities were unable to locate the driver and passengers in the vicinity.

No one was injured in the crash, officials said. This is an ongoing investigation.
