Iguanaland is coming to Lansing quickly
Ty Park has long dreamed of opening a park for reptiles.
Soon his dream will come true as he plans to open the world’s largest reptile zoo in Lansing.
“I bought this place in 2007 just to raise animals and do conservation work for reptiles,” said Park, president of Iguanaland.
Park said he’ll likely have 250 to 300 different types.
“That would make us the largest reptile zoo in the world,” said Park.
Reptile Gardens in Rapid City, South Dakota currently holds this title. Guinness World Records said the park has and counts more than 225 different species.
Park said Iguanaland might not be the biggest once it opens, but he expects to be the biggest this year.
Park asked workers from all over the US to come to Detroit County to put the finishing touches on it. He said he believed it would help animals feel at home.
“We replicate various forms of rock, be it granite or limestone, to match the habitat of actual animals,” said Dan Jennison, owner of Jennison Studios.
The zoo could open as early as July.
Park said his goal is to raise children and focus on conservation work. Park hopes to raise approximately $ 250,000 annually to help protect the zoo’s environmental efforts. The zoo wants to be family-friendly and not keep poisonous animals on the property.
