MARQUETTE – Next week is volleyball week with 11 high school teams from the region playing in seven county tournaments across all four MHSAA divisions.

All but one of the districts are considered “Not traditional”, This means that every game in these tournaments is hosted by one of the teams involved. And it also means that some non-hosts can host their championship games on Thursday or Friday.

The one “traditionally” District is hosted by Big Bay de Noc and includes Munising and Superior Central in Division 4, so all games bring the teams to Garden.

However, the promotion begins on Monday when six of the districts play. The only one that won’t play that day is hosted by Rudyard in Division 4 and includes Newberry, and that’s because there are only four teams so there is no need for a quarter-final round.

Hardly half of the schools will have to play a quarter-final game on Monday. Marquette can play in a dedicated Division 1 district gym hosted by Traverse City Central. The Redettes play in this 6pm game against Traverse City’s other public school, TC West

Gwinn will play at 6 p.m. on Monday in Westwood in a Division 3 district hosted by Hancock.

Three district teams will play in two Division 4 districts on Monday.

Munising will meet Mid Peninsula in Garden in the Big Bay de Noc district at 6.30 p.m., the second match of a double-headed player there.

L’Anse receives Lake Linden-Hubbell and Baraga receives Chassell in a district hosted by L’Anse, both games at 6pm

In addition to Newberry, Negaunee in the Division 2 district of Houghton, Ishpeming in the Division 3 district of Hancock, Manistique in the Division 3 district of Gladstone and Superior Central in the Division 4 district of Great Bay.

All seven districts will play two semi-finals on Wednesday, so any team that survives a Monday game will play.

Then three of the districts play their championship games on Thursday evening and the other four on Friday. Some of the finals are believed to have been scheduled on Thursday to avoid possible conflicts with the soccer playoff games on Friday.

The district champions advance to the regional championships, which will be held the following week. Regional semifinals are scheduled for Monday November 9th and championships are scheduled for Wednesday November 11th.

Although regional locations change occasionally, often due to the geography of the teams involved, Westwood High School will host a Division 3 regional semi-finals on November 9th. Some other UP locations outside the region will host other division 3 and 4 regional games.

The last three rounds of the MHSAA tournaments are played in the third week of November. Quarter-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, November 16, in a number of locations across the state, including Munising High School in Division 4.

The semi-finals on Thursday, November 18 and Friday, November 19, and the state finals on Saturday, November 20, will all be played at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
