Grand Rapids plans citywide light event for Veterans Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – Grand Rapids is partnering with the United Veterans Council of Kent County to celebrate Veterans Day with a four-day Light Grand Rapids event.

According to a press release on Tuesday, the event will urge all residents and businesses to light their yards and homes over the weekend of Veterans Day.

In addition, the United Veterans Council of Kent County will host a flag-lowering ceremony on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans in place of its annual city-sponsored Veterans Day Parade. Everyone is welcome to attend this outdoor event.

Residents are encouraged to turn on a light, hang a flag, or put up other decorations on Veteran’s Day.

“We want to celebrate this important day with the lighting of Grand Rapids,” said Evette Pittman, special events manager for the city’s Office of Special Events. “We want to show appreciation and remember the sacrifices of those who courageously serve our nation so that everyone in our community can participate.”

City officials have pledged to illuminate several public spaces, including parking ramps and underpasses, and to reach private spaces for participation. Verified Participating Sites include:

  • Blue bridge
  • Gallery parking lot
  • Bridge Street underpass
  • Pearl Street underpass

A separate group will present a Veterans Parade in downtown Grand Rapids on Thursday at 6 p.m.
