Detroit City FC defeats Cal United, completes sweep of NISA’s 2021 season championships

Maximiliano Rodriguez scored a penalty in the first half and Detroit City FC clinched the National Independent Soccer Association’s fall championship with a 1-0 win over Cal United Strikers FC on Saturday in Hamtramck.

The win gave Detroit City an overview of NISA’s twin seasons for 2021, when it won the Spring Season Championship in July.

Rodriguez scored after Javan Torre went down from behind in the penalty area. His shot hit the left post and was just out of reach of the striker’s keeper, giving Le Rouge the lead in the 34th minute.

Le Rouge keeper Nate Steinwascher earned the shutout. His biggest stop came in the second half with an indirect free kick from just outside the box.

Detroit City (12-1-2) is 12 points ahead of the Los Angeles Force with three games pending.

The players celebrated the championship on the field in true Le Rouge fashion, accepted the league cup, carried a smoke bomb across the field, sprayed champagne bottles and drank what looked like beer in front of the fans of the North Guard.

The Detroit City home game will take place on Saturday, November 6th at 4pm at Keyworth Stadium against Chattanooga FC.
