Daniel F McCormick
June 25, 1970 –
January 17, 2022
Daniel McCormick, born on June 25, 1970, passed over from this life to the arms of the Lord on Jan. 17, 2022, after a several year struggle with persistent pain of rheumatoid arthritis. He lived his fifty-one years at such a pace as us ordinary mortals would need a hundred years to accomplish. Everywhere he went he made people laugh. He was a human dynamo, quick of mind and eager to have fun. People wanted to be around him, so he had many close friends in Chicago, California, and in Traverse City where he grew up. He graduated from St. Francis High School in 1988.
His life was exciting. He saved kids’ lives on three occasions as a mere boy, two in swimming pools, one in his own hospital room at nine years old. He lost his pituitary gland at the age of nine in brain surgery. That caused medical problems all his life. Yet he always came back like a phoenix bird, graduated from Loyola University in Chicago and succeeded in business, mostly in Monterey, California.
Dan loved hockey and captained in two men’s leagues well into his thirties. He also became a surfer at the famous Carmel beach on the Pacific. He had a great love of music and was a talented guitarist. He frequently went to concerts and was in a band in Monterey called Vulture King. One of Dan’s most special qualities was his ability to connect with young people. He was godfather to many. Young people gravitate towards him and his amazing energy, love of fun, and advice.
Dan spent a year in Europe during college, went to Berlin when the wall came down, was bit by a monkey in Tangier, Morocco and cooked on a sailboat in the Greek islands to pay his way during spring break. He married Sarah Kincaid. They had some beautiful years in Monterey. They both were very active in the Monterey County Democratic Party, especially during the Obama years. He was an inspiring presence there as a data guru and volunteer coordinator at numerous Democratic campaigns in Monterey County, where he helped launch several political careers. It was quite a ride. He made many good friends in the political world in California.
Eventually he was diagnosed with RA (rheumatoid arthritis) which led to several years of intense pain and eventually to a level of pain in which he could no longer work. He fought it hard, and received tremendous support from friends near and far away.
Danny, Dan, Daniel, or Danny Boy, take your pick, will be sorely missed, but lovingly remembered by so many, including his father, Jim McCormick; sister and brother-in-law, Ginny McCormick Newman and Darric Newman; his brother, David McCormick and wife Ji-eun Lee; Nephews, Cameron and Ben Newman; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial mass and gathering of family and friends will be held in early June in the Traverse City area, with burial by his mother’s side in Suttons Bay. His many grieving friends in Monterey, California are also planning a special occasion of remembrance.
