Community groups to provide food for Detroit neighborhood that lost grocery store to fire

(WXYZ) – Several Detroit community groups come together to help those affected at a local grocery store on the east side of the city last month.

The Harper Food Center caught fire on February 20th and was destroyed in the fire. Detroit’s Council of Baptist Pastors has partnered with the Jewis Community Relations Council, Gleaners, Hearts for Humanity, and others to form the Harper Food Center’s Citizen Recovery Project.

The aim is to provide groceries and clothing to the neighborhood that lost its grocery store in the fire.

Once a week from 2 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays in March and on Thursday, March 18, the group will provide food to up to 300 families at three locations on the east side.

These locations are:

1) Greater Christ Baptist Church, 3544 Iroquois Ave., Detroit. Those in need can pick up fresh produce, a gallon of milk per household, a 30-pound box of shelf-stable groceries and frozen meat and eggs for free. COVID-19 precautionary measures are observed.

2) Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 4743 Iroquois St., Detroit. Those in need can pick up coats, blankets, clothing for adults and children, shoes and other accessories. Meals on request.

3) Lord of Lords Missionary Baptist Church, 9341 Chalmers St., Detroit. Those in need can pick up non-perishable boxes of stable food along with some refrigerated food on March 16.

The group said they may be able to increase demand after the first week as well as after March and meet more demand, depending on the recovery in business.

“On behalf of the Harper Food Center Citizen Recovery Project, I am delighted that we can help the neighborhood affected by the devastating fire at Harper Food Center,” said Rev. Dr. Steve Bland, Jr., President of the Council of Detroit Baptist Pastors and Vicinity, Inc. “In the absence of the food center, the nearby church has quickly become a food wasteland in an already food unsafe area. There was no way our organizations could stand idly by while individuals and families starve. We are the salt of the earth and light for the world. “

The project also accepts volunteers who work on one or more of the dates listed. Interested parties can register by emailing [email protected]
