Ann Arbor Pioneer’s women’ basketball team has been closed due to COVID-19

In the opening week of the state tournament, several top-class girls’ basketball teams were marginalized due to COVID problems.

Ann Arbor Pioneer was added to that list on Wednesday.

Pioneer – 13-2 and runner-up after Saline # 4 in the Southeastern Conference Red Division – was supposed to play Belleville (10-2) in a Division 1 semi-final at Saline, but had to go to the sidelines due to COVID-19.

Michigan High School Athletic Association’s director of communications, Geoff Kimmerly, said about 100 basketball teams for boys and girls have been eliminated from the state tournament due to COVID issues, including two-time defending Division 1 basketball champion Saginaw Heritage and state powers for Girls, No. 18 West Bloomfield and No. 20 Detroit Cass Tech.
