Ann Arbor basketball highlights: Saline boys hitting stride with best start in five years

SALINE – It’s been five years since a Saline boys basketball team started a season with this much success.

The Hornets won their third straight game and fifth in the last five games as they topped Dexter 56-45 on Tuesday.

Saline improved to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference-Red. The 8-2 start is the program’s best since opening the 2016-17 season at 9-1.

After entering the fourth quarter ahead 33-29, the Hornets pulled away with a 23-point fourth quarter to hand the Dreadnaughts their fourth loss in five games.

Josh Koch led Saline with 14 points, Cooper Fairman scored 12 and Nick Boettger added 10.

Brennan Parachek paced Dexter with 16 points, followed by 12 points from Cal Bavineau and nine points from Ty Rychener.

Saline will look to extend his win streak against Ypsilanti Lincoln on Friday, while Dexter (5-4, 3-3 SEC-Red) will host Ann Arbor Skyline.

Father Gabriel Richard can’t keep up with Detroit Loyola

FGR dropped its second straight game, falling 54-40 to Detroit Loyola.

John Paul Fredericks led FGR with 10 points, while Russ Schwartz and Aiden Moon each added nine points.

FGR will next face Macomb Lutheran North on Friday.

Lincoln edges Pioneer in overtime

The Railsplitters refused to let Pioneer pick up its third overtime win of the season as they held off the Pioneers to claim a 50-47 win.

Lincoln outscored Pioneer 6-3 in the extra period to pick up its third win in the past four games and snapped Pioneer’s 3-game win streak.

Daivion Traylor led Lincoln with a triple-double as he recorded 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks and Kamari Joplin led the team with 18 points.

Pioneer was led by Josiah Schaafsma, who finished with 17 points. Josh Truman had nine points and eight rebounds and Will Sanok Duffalo scored eight points.

Lincoln (5-4, 3-3 SEC-Red) will host Saline on Friday, while Pioneer will travel to rival Ann Arbor Huron.

Skyline snaps 2-game skid vs. Bedford

After hitting a bump in the road, the Eagles found a way to right the ship on Tuesday with a 49-42 victory over Temperance Bedford.

Skyline outscored Bedford 17-9 in the third quarter to lead 41-26 heading into the fourth quarter and did late enough to secure the win.

Will Gardner had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Skyline, while Ben Stille scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds and Sam Koelling recorded six points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Eagles (7-3, 5-2 SEC-Red) will head to Dexter on Friday.

Dexter tops Saline to take lead in SEC-Red

The Dreadnaughts used a 6-0 run in the final minute of the fourth quarter to shock No. 7 Saline, 43-39.

Dexter knocked Saline from the ranks of the unbeatens and took over first place in the SEC-Red in the win.

Father Gabriel Richard drops another close game

The past three games for the Fighting Irish have tough losses to say the least. FGR dropped its third straight game by one possession, falling to Dearborn Divine Child 48-43.

FGR trailed 46-43 late in the game and missed the game-tying 3-pointer as it fell to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in the Catholic High School League.

Charlotte Miller led FGR with 23 points, while Kennedy Blair finished with 25 points for Divine Child.

FGR will look to end its skid Friday at Macomb Lutheran North.

Huron drops matchup with Monroe

The River Rats fell 52-51 to Monroe, dropping their third straight game. Saige Edmondson led Huron with 10 points, followed by nine points from Cora Williams and eight points from Elena Leucht.

Huron (4-8, 1-6 SEC-Red) will try to snap its skid at rival Pioneer on Friday.

Whitmore Lake downs Parkway Christian

The Trojans won their second game in the past three outings with a 52-32 win over Sterling Heights Parkway Christian.

Brooke Craven led WL with 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three blocked shots, while Alexis Karpenko recorded 10 points, four blocks and four assists and Adriana Canter added 12 rebounds and eight points.

Whitmore Lake improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference and will be back on the court Friday against Livonia Clarenceville.
