Jiri Fischer brings NHL, Detroit Red Wing friends to 14th Shocks and Saves game

The 14th Shocks and Saves Charity Game is Saturday, featuring some familiar faces and a few new ones.

The game, spearheaded by former Detroit Red Wing standout Jiri Fischer, has raised more than $700,000 and has placed more than 250 Automated External Defibrillators in the Saginaw area, resulting in 11 lives saved.

Fischer will bring several former Detroit Red Wing and NHL players with him to play in the 3:30 pm game at the Dow Event Center, competing against Saginaw-area first responders and physicians. The game is sponsored by the Pulse3 Foundation, Mobile Medical Response, the Central Michigan University College of Medicine and the Saginaw Spirit.

The Saginaw Spirit take on the London Knights at 7:05 pm Saturday.

Fischer, a five-year player for the Detroit Red Wings and member of the 2002 Stanley Cup champions, saw his career end after suffering cardiac arrest during a game in 2005.

He is joined by former NHL players John Ogrodnick, Jason Woolley, Jimmy Carson, Milan Hejduk and Brett MacLean.

Hejduk, who played for the Colorado Avalanche, and MacLean, who played in the NHL for Phoenix and Winnipeg, are making their first appearances. MacLean’s career ended after suffering a cardiac event during a pick-up hockey game in 2012.

Tickets for the Shocks and Saves Game and the Spirit game against London are available at the Saginaw Spirit store at 6321 State Street in Saginaw. Tickets are also available at Saginawspirit.com.

Schedule change

The Saginaw Spirit were scheduled to play the Sarnia Sting on Jan. 7, but the game was postponed for COVID reasons. Instead, the Spirit will travel to Sarnia for a game at 7:05 pm Tuesday, Feb. 1.
