ALPENA – Alpenas JV football squad won a huge home win over the Traverse City West Titans last Thursday with a score of 40:20.

The Wildcats lit up the cool and rainy evening with sparkling efforts on both sides of the ball and special teams. Linebacker Joe Sheridan led the attack with a punt block in the first quarter, which was returned to the one-yard line by Brady Carlson. Quarterback Jonathon Rensberry found the end zone on the next play and a two-point conversion gave Alpena an 8-0 lead.

At the next whistle, Conner Sauve forced a Titan fumble, which was covered up by Kaleb Donajkowski, in order to bring the Wildcats back on the offensive. Donajkowski soon found Paydirt on a 35-yard run.

Alpena continued to suppress the Titan offensive and scored two more goals in the first half. Rensberry added his second roaring touchdown of the night on a nine-yard stop and passed for another on a 20-yard connection with defenseman Hunter Cohoon. An interception by Easton Srebnik and a sack by Rensberry in the first half underscored the strong defensive pressure for the ‘Cats, which led to a 28-0 lead at half time.

In the second half, a solid offensive line drove the JV crew to two more long touchdown strikes on the ground. Elyjah Chism dodged the defenders for a 70-yard score and Donajkowski ended the offensive with a 78-yard touchdown run.

Donajkowski had 204 rushing yards and Chism contributed 111 more.

On the defensive side of the ball, Donajkowski forced a fumble and tied linebacker Ty Dever to lead the team in tackles with 8.5 apiece. Chism and Rensberry each added their own fumble recovery.

Alpena was to receive Gaylord on Thursday.
