2021 Sara Hardy Humanitarian Award Recipients Recognized At City Commission Meeting

The winners of the Sara Hardy Humanitarian Award 2021 were honored in Traverse City on Monday.

Traverse City Mayor Jim Carruthers presented the awards during the city commission meeting Monday night.

Ryan Hannon is one of this year’s award winners. Hannon is the Outreach Coordinator at Goodwill Industries and has worked with the homeless population of Traverse City for more than a decade.

“Getting up here and saying that I’ve been homeless for 14 years hurts a bit because homelessness is an issue that we can end,” said Hannon. “We know that the end of homelessness is housing.”

Bill and Michelle White were also Sara Hardy Humanitarian Recipients in 2021.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, they founded the non-profit organization “5 Loaves, 2 Fish” to serve meals to people with food insecurity.

So far, they have served more than 6,000 meals.

“It doesn’t feel like we’re helping people,” said Michelle White. “It feels like we have the opportunity to be with really cool people and they make us better people.”

The Traverse City Commission also voted to declare November Homelessness Awareness Month on Monday night.
