2021 NFL draft: Notre Dame DE, Daelin Hayes of Ann Arbor, selected by Ravens in Round 5
Ann Arbor Skyline graduate Daelin Hayes will have a hometown connection with his first professional soccer coach after John Harbaugh-led Baltimore Ravens selected the former Notre Dame defensive end in Round 5 of the 2021 NFL draft.
Hayes, a 6-foot-4, 253-pound pass rusher, was the 171st overall pick and 27th pick of the fifth round.
He has a fifth-year senior season at Notre Dame in which he started all 12 games and completed 17 tackles (6 due to loss), three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception and three quarterback rushes, to help the Irish reach the college football playoffs.
Hayes is the seventh Notre Dame player to be drawn out of the Irish 10-2 season. This ended with successive defeats against the national champion Clemson in the ACC title game and the NCAA runner-up Alabama in the playoff semifinals.
The 2016 Skyline Graduate made an instant impression in South Bend. He played as a freshman in all 12 games and recorded 11 tackles and one forced fumble in his rookie year.
He secured a spot in his sophomore year and produced 30 tackles (6.5 for loss), three sacks, and two fiddly recoveries in 13 games, followed by a junior campaign in which he did 31 tackles (5 for loss), two sacks and a fiddly recovery.
Hayes suffered an end-of-season shoulder injury in Week 4 of his senior season that allowed him to play a red shirt last fall and return as a fifth year player.
As the 2020 team captain, Hayes was a semi-finalist for College Football Comeback Player of the Year in 2020 and won the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award, which goes to a Football Bowl Subdivision player who makes others’ lives through donations and community service influenced.
In Baltimore, Hayes will play under head coach John Harbaugh, who attended high school with Ann Arbor Pioneer.
He’s the Ravens’ seventh pick in the 2021 draft and the second pass rusher, along with Penn State’s Odafe Oweh, who was penultimate in Round 1.
Baltimore will have to replace the 55 tackles and seven sacks that Pontiac-born and former Grand Valley State star Matt Judon counted last season before signing with the New England Patriots, and Hayes and Oweh should have the opportunity to do that To fill the void.
