A volleyball player recorded her 1,000th career death while a soccer player helped his team beat the country’s number one.
These are just two of the student-athletes taking part in the Grand Rapids Athlete of the Week poll this week.

Makenzie Baldwin
School: West Ottawa
Sports: swimming
Baldwin, a sprint freestyler, won two races in the Panthers’ 92.2-62.1 victory over Zeeland. Baldwin won the 50 Free in 25.24 and the 100 Free in 54.88.
Carlina Bender
School: Hudsonville
Sport: volleyball
Bender, an all-state second-team pick a year ago, helped the Eagles win the East Kentwood Invitational, recording seven service aces and 39 digs that day.
Meghan booty
School: Bund Christian
Sport: cross-country skiing
Beute took first place at the Christian School Invitational on Saturday (18: 28.6) after receiving top honors at the Delton Kellogg Invitational (19.24.4) on Thursday.
Caden Brink
School: Holland Christian
Sport: soccer
Brink’s goal in the second half gave the Maroons a 2-1 lead over number one, Unity Christian. Holland Christian won 3-1.
Lauren Davis
School: Coopersville
Sport: golf
Davis shot a 74 to win medalists at the annual Russ Johnsen Invitational in Gracewil and led the Broncos to second place.
Evie Doezema
School: Grand Rapids Christian
Sport: volleyball
Doezema hit a milestone last week when she turned 1,000. Doezema, who had 21 kills in the match, was an all-stater of the second team last season.
Addy Forbes
School: Northview
Sports: swimming
Forbes won two races to help the Wildcats win the DeWitt Invitational by conquering the 100 Butterflies (1: 02.92) and the 200 Individual Medleys (2: 14.89).
Colin Graham
School: Rockford
Sport: cross-country skiing
Graham finished second at the Bret Clements Bath Invitational with a time of 16 minutes and 16.54 seconds for the Rams, who finished second behind Northville.
Jaiden Karem
School: Byron Center
Sport: tennis
Sports: The Bulldogs improved to 10-0-2 in the season with a win over East Grand Rapids, and Karem was one of the standout, winning his No. 2 single flight 6-0, 6-1.
