This elegant, Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Michigan home brings the outdoors inside

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – A sprawling 18 acre wooded lot just 15 minutes from Ann Arbor is home to a beautifully designed, bespoke home inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s style.

The Custom Home at 3900 N. Dixboro Road in Superior Township was designed in 1992 by architect Carl D. Gilmore, who began his career under Alden B. Dow, a former Wright apprentice. Inspired by the Prairie School where Wright began his career, the home blends the natural beauty of the property with extensive custom woodwork and masonry.

Six hundred tons of Oklahoma “Pencil Rock” form the structure as well as the interior and exterior walls of the house. Instead of being mined or mined, the stone is taken out of the ground at the surface and cut as little as possible to preserve the natural edges and visible texture.

Custom-made sashes made of cherry wood, furniture and decorative beams with integrated lighting fixtures complement the stone walls inside the house.

The architect’s references to Wright even extend to the cast brass fittings used for the latches on the windows of the house. The architect sought out and used the same shapes that Wright used for similar hardware in his homes.

The four bedroom, 4.5 bath house is built into a natural hillside, with a winter garden, terrace, and two entrances, each with a unique view over the wooded acres.

A wide staircase leads to a balcony above the open living area, which is connected to the master suite on the upper floor. Two bedrooms on the ground floor are connected by separate hallways to a shared office space and bathroom with his and hers sinks.

As in many of Wright’s designs, there are seating areas scattered throughout the house with built-in lounge benches and cupboards.

The kitchen has commercial appliances including a six-burner stove with gas grill. Extensive custom-made furniture and lights match the design of the house and are included in the sale.

The 5,100-square-foot home is listed by real estate agent Keith Brandt at $ 3.67 million.
