The 12U team from Central Outlaws from Lansing remains undefeated at the state tournament

LANSING, NY – The Central Outlaws 12U hockey team won the Tier III New York State Hockey Championship on April 25 at Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena and finished the season with an overall record 26-3-0, according to a Finger Lakes announcement Regional Hockey Association.

Since 2016, Central Outlaws’ youth hockey program has sent either a team or two to the state tournament every year, despite the competition being disrupted last year by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Coach Russell Johnson commented in a press release: “When parents say to me,” My child doesn’t seem to have enough play time in games, I worry it’s affecting his or her development. “It’s easy for a coach to react to that ‘Don’t worry, you get better when you practice, not the games.”

Johnson said that instead he asks if the child is learning more with homework or by simply taking the test to draw the line between exercise and education and the preparation that both of them require. COVID-19 continued to hang over the team in the fall. In response, Johnson introduced a training plan with additional safety protocols to keep families and skaters safe.

The players completed six on-ice sessions per week, with individual and small team exercises in the foreground. Trainers and the health department worked together to try to maintain safe practices and guidelines as the season continued.

“I’m so proud of all of the Central Outlaws players,” said Johnson. “It took real dedication to complete such a monumental task at a time when the world said ‘NO’ to everything. This group of young people said ‘YES, I CAN’.”
