See Lawton’s final key plays in thrilling football semifinal win over Lumen Christi

BATTLE CREEK, MI – After its fifth sales mid-fourth quarter, it looked like Lawton’s dream season was coming to an end through Jackson Lumen Christi in the Division 7 Football State semifinals at Harper Creek High School.

But the Blue Devils defenses dug deep and got a snack of their own, then marched on a 47-yard scoring drive followed by a 1-yard touchdown run and a subsequent two-point conversion scamper from quarterback Landon Motter with a 46 second lead in the quarter to lead his team to a 21:20 comeback win over the Titans.

Lawton was content to try the draw, but after Lumen Christi was reported for roughing kicker Logan Nap, Blue Devils head coach Wade Waldrup put his team’s season on the shoulders of his offensive line, trusting the unit comprised of Evan Stephayn, Drew Stephayn, Carter Mayne, Nolan Collins and Jace Riggs deliver 3 yards.

The Blue Devils offensive line put enough pressure on Motter to get the edge and cut the field for the greatest run of his life that secured Lawton’s first trip to the state finals.

But with 46 seconds to go, the game was far from over as Lumen Christi took the field after finishing the end zone on a 65-yard touchdown run from Derrick Walker and a 72-yard scoop and score from Ralph Golden had found.

The Titans opened their final drive, barely missing two sacks from Lawton Safety Jake Rueff, then took a nice win with a screen pass from Teddy Ahlers to Nick Wilson before hitting the ball 24 seconds to go.

At the second deficit, Ahlers uncorked a deep pass that came from the fingertips of a well-covered Golden before Lawton’s defense got through with a game-defeating interception by Senior Cooper Geib.

All that was left for the fourth-placed Blue Devils was to kneel down and crack down on the runner-up Pewamo-Westphalia at Ford Field at 10:00 on Saturday to win all the marbles.

Lawton seeks his first state title, while Pewamo-Westphalia, a 28-21 semi-final winner over Traverse City St. Francis, seeks his fourth title in six years.
