June 14, 2022
Roy Raymond Nerg, a current resident of Chassell, MI and a former resident of Frankfort, MI, passed away on June 14, 2022, from heart failure. Roy Raymond Nerg was born May 3, 1934, at the Nerg Farm where he lived until passing. His mother, Hulda Sormunen, was born and raised in the Copper Country, and his father, Charles Nerg was born in Vaassa, Finland. Roy graduated from Chassell Schools as Valedictorian in 1951. After graduation he studied Electrical Engineering at Michigan College of Mining & Technology (MTU). He then moved to the Detroit area and worked at Penn Central Railroad. During that time, he was drafted and served in the US Army for 27 months from 1956-1959 in Germany and was a specialist in maintenance of Nike Missiles. Roy started dating Connie Pokela in Chassell while on leave and the two were married on December 27, 1957. Connie later joined him in Germany until he was honorably discharged from the Army. They then settled in Dearborn, MI to raise three children. After the Army, Roy returned to work at Penn Central Railroad as a roadway accountant and statistician while attending college. He received a BA in 1968 from the Detroit Institute of Technology as a Math Major, and then a Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University in Guidance and Counseling with a Teaching Certificate in 1972. The family then moved to Frankfort, MI, where Roy worked as a Guidance Counselor at Frankfort High School until 1986. Roy loved photography. Throughout his life he took many scenic photos as well as pictures at many weddings, group gatherings, sporting events and, of course, of family. He also had his own business in Frankfort called Photos Unlimited where he sold his scenic photographs and did matting and framing. From 1988-1996 he was the manager at CPI Photo Finish in Traverse City, MI. After retiring he enjoyed part-time work at different frame shops, the last being State of Art Framing in Beulah, MI. Roy also loved music and singing. He sang in church choirs all his adult life. He and Connie were among the original members of the Benzie Community Chorus. One of his greatest joys was traveling to Europe, four times, with his chorus family. What a beautiful tenor voice he had! Besides his parents, preceding Roy in death were his siblings, Carl, Mildred, Toivo, John (Freddie) and Kenneth, his wife, Connie, and their son, Chuck. Roy is survived by his son, Mike (Julie) Nerg of Frankfort and their children, Jeremiah Nerg of Frankfort, Justin (Paula) Nerg of Lake Ann, Ml, Steven (Amanda) Nerg of Macon, GA, and Kevin (Sydney) Nerg of Lakeville, MN; and daughter Sue (Tom) Truelove of Chasse!l and their children, Levi (Jen) Truelove of Traverse City, Casey (Amanda) Truelove of Mt. Pleasant, MI, and Terra (Mik) Chall of Jackson, MI. Also surviving are 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Vera Nerg of Cheboygan, MI; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Visitation and the funeral will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort, MI on Saturday, July 2, with visitation from 10-11 am followed by the service at 11:00 am with Pastor Rick Stieve officiating. Burial will be in the Crystal Lake Township North Cemetery in Frankfort. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials to the Omega House, 2211 Maureen Lane, Houghton, MI 49931. We would like to send special thanks to the Aspirus Hospice Staff and to the Omega House staff and volunteers for their support and care to Roy, and to us.
