A small ribbon cutting ceremony was held yesterday at the new Fire Station 3 at the north end of the Old Mission Peninsula.

In attendance were employees of the peninsula fire department and fire department chief Fred Gilstorff, members of the Township Board, Paul Mahon from Grand Traverse Construction, the architect Ray Kenda from Environment Architects and the project manager Jennifer Hodges from Gourdie-Fraser (who brought the donuts!). Township Supervisor Rob Manigold manned the scissors and cut the ribbon.

While there is still some outdoor work to be done, including landscaping, the station on the north end of the parish is operational and will be manned from April 1, 2021.

An open day for the public to tour the station will take place at a later date.

Gilstorff thanked the community for their support and donations, including Golden Fowler in Traverse City for their furniture donation. The beautiful quilt in the photos below is also from Stitches of Kindness, a program by Samaritas Senior Living from Traverse City.

The new fire station was built on Center Road 19270 between Swaney Road and Tompkins Road in autumn and winter. The building includes accommodations for fire fighters and will also house a Medical First Response Truck.

According to Gilstorff, the new fire station will not only improve response times in this area, it will also help improve the fire brigade’s ISO ratings and provide better insurance premiums for residents in this area. (More information on ISO ratings can be found here.)
