Detroit greenway named in honor of former Mayor Archer | State News

DETROIT (AP) – A 1.2 mile (1.9 km) long bike and hiking trail that connects some eastern neighborhoods of Detroit to the city’s riverside is named in honor of former Mayor Dennis Archer.

Work on Mayor Dennis W. Archer Greenway is expected to be completed this year, the city said.

It will connect the popular Detroit Riverwalk north to the Vernor Highway.

Portions of the $ 4.9 million greenway opened to the public last year. Construction of the final phase began in October. Federal grants and road loans pay for the work.

As a lawyer, Archer was Mayor of Detroit from 1994 to 2001 and of the Michigan Supreme Court from 1986 to 1990.
