‘I’m lost for phrases’ — Detroit family-owned business set on fire

DETROIT – A family business that has served the community for decades was badly damaged after someone deliberately set it on fire Monday morning.

S&C Glass is located at the intersection of Gratiot and Marcus Streets. Between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., someone started a fire that devoured most of the building.

“I just got a call this morning. It was unexpected, ”said owner Curtis Sylvester. “My father started the business in 1974 and I took over the business in 2004. Right now I’m in disbelief. I’m lost for words.”

The company has been offering affordable prices to the region for almost 50 years. But now there is nothing left but rubble. Unfortunately, Sylvester is concerned that he will not be able to pass the family business on to another generation.

“I’m just trying to bring it back up to date so I can take care of my family because that’s how I eat and serve the community at the same time,” he said.

Unfortunately, New Year’s Eve doesn’t have insurance due to the pandemic and other financial difficulties.

“I just can’t afford it. I can’t afford it with the times we’re living in now. I wish I could, but I can’t, ”he said.

It will be a tedious rebuilding process, but in the end he hopes that the community he has served for so long can give him answers about who wants to demolish the building.

“I can only pray now. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this, you know, ”he said.
