East Lansing “appreciates” the chance to play and sweeps Holt at home

EAST LANSING, me. (WLNS) – As a team of 12 seniors, the East Lansing baseball team is taking full advantage of their chance to play this season.

After last season was canceled due to COVID-19 and a two-week break at the start of the season, the Trojans didn’t start their season against Fowlerville until April 19. On Thursday, April 29th, the Trojans’ game with Holt was postponed to Friday due to the rain.

East Lansing took the first lead of the game in the second inning. After a home game on the right field, the Trojans took a 2-1 lead when Charlie Wilk scored a third goal.

The Trojans added another run in the 3rd inning, but the Rams came back to tie things up in the 4th inning – Eddie McDonald posted an RBI single in left field and Tyler Yemc was the first to get an outfield pick.

In the next half, East Lansing took the lead due to a mistake that allowed Will Knapp to score from third place. It was the second time in the game that EL reacted in the bottom half of an inning to take the lead.

“We talked a lot about that. Number one, we’ve done a few runs and we want a shutdown, ”said Mark Pendred, East Lansing baseball coach. “If they do a few runs, we have to score again.”

“Marty (Johnson) threw a damn good game and Connor (God) played a damn good game behind the plate, holding the balls in front of him,” said Ethan Cullen, East Lansing senior pitcher. “It was a good team win for us.”

After scoring two hits in the 4th inning, the Trojans added a run in both the 5th and 6th innings to beat Holt 7-3. East Lansing scored seven more runs to sweep the Rams in the second game of the double header 7-6.

“Those older guys were absent last year and I’m just glad they play out here. That’s all we want to do to make as many games as possible this year and let these kids play the game, ”Pendred said.

“I only cherish the moments when they pass,” said Cullen. “With COVID, I really realized that time flies, especially when you can’t be with people. I just appreciate everything that is everything.”
