Detroit community activist speaks out against violence as weather warms up

DETROIT – A community activist with Thousands Strong hopes Detroiters will step back and think before acting.

“We have irrational minds at the moment. We have people who don’t think before reacting and these are the things that can easily lead you to jail or an early grave, ”said Oliver Gantt.

Gantt has a message that he believes every Detroit citizen should hear.

“My message is accountability. People need to be accountable for their actions. If you go out to have fun, you are having fun responsibly, ”he said.

He said a combination of large crowds and heat, plus the fact that they are all locked for over a year, is a recipe for disaster if people don’t consider their actions.

“I know how it is … That is mainly the reason why I stand here and do what I do today and also prevent people from going to jail,” said Gantt, who spent decades in the heat of a crime Heat in prison sat moment.

Gantt created Thousands Strong while serving a 20-year prison sentence in hopes of sparing others life in prison or death. Life can change because of a bad decision, he said.

“My hope is primarily to prevent someone from entering the justice system and ending up in jail or early grave for not thinking before reacting out here,” he said.

He also wants those behind the wheel to drive rationally.

“We have a lot of people who want to come in their beautiful cars, their fast cars, who want to drive their four-wheelers and motorcycles. Again, you have to be responsible for what you do because we still have citizens out here who drive civilized out here. They want to make it home to their families to have a good time, ”he said.

Gantt said he is working with the community to hold workshops and get more people to learn more about conflict prevention and various techniques that can be used to defuse situations.
