The Oakland baseball team took the diamond on Sunday against Lansing Community College for the first time since last season. The Golden Grizzlies put together an offensive masterpiece in a 19-4 beatdown of the Stars.

Coming off an impressive 31 wins last season, head coach Jordon Banfield and the Golden Grizzlies are looking to add to last year’s historic season. It all starts in the fall, and Oakland began its quest for greatness on Sunday.

Oakland scored 19 runs on 12 hits en route to an absolute onslaught of the Lansing Community College Stars.

Brandon Heidal and Brandon Nigh led the way for the Golden Grizzlies, as the two combined for half of the team’s hits. The junior and sophomore, respectively, each went 3-5.

Heidal also recorded two hits by pitches as he reached base in five of his six at bats.

Nigh picked up right where he left off from last season. As a true freshman last year, he finished near the top of almost every hitting statistic.

After batting .327 with a 1,038 OPS and driving in 32 runs in his freshman campaign, he received high praise not only from his teammates and coaches, but also from the Horizon League when they named him their Freshman of the Year back in May.

The now sophomore didn’t lose a step over the offseason. In Sunday’s game, he hit a home run, a triple and a double, and finished just a single shy of hitting for the cycle.

He finished with a stunning eight RBIs, and he crossed the plate three times as well, accounting for 11 of Oakland’s 19 runs.

Redshirt sophomore Reagan Paulina also showed out for the Golden Grizzlies. Paulina finished the game 2-2 with a home run and two walks. He also stole a base, scored three runs and drove in two, as well.

As for pitching, Brandon Decker and Jake Matthaidess juniors each recorded multiple strikeouts, and showed a lot of promise on the mound for the Golden Grizzlies.

The Stars struck right away in the top of the first with a deep home run, but Oakland answered with four runs of its own in the home half of the inning and never looked back.

Lansing Community failed to score for the next nine innings, in what turned out to be a friendly 12-inning game.

Oakland will enjoy a lengthy break before it crosses the Michigan-Ohio border on Oct. 16 to take on the Toledo Rockets in the second game of its fall schedule.

The 2023 schedule is yet to be finalized for Oakland. Getting the opportunity to play friendly games in the fall will not only help the returning starters, but it also serves as an opportunity to get the younger players some more experience as they try and perfect their crafts in hopes of one day starting on the team.

Lansing Police Department rolls out new program to better respond to crises

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – No guns, no flashing lights, no uniforms — Just care.

The Lansing police department is implementing a new program to better help serve mental health crises. The program is a collaboration with social workers, police officers and the fire department.

Lansing police social work supervisor Jessica Martin said this effort is supposed to meet the needs of those who need it most.

“This team would be dedicated to problem solving and connecting the city of Lansing residents to the resources and support that are already available in the community,” Martin said.

LCAT stands for Lansing Crisis Assessment Team where the police will work with mental health and social welfare services to get people the right care as opposed to putting them in the criminal justice system.

Martin said usually when people are going through a mental health crisis they call 911, which sometimes doesn’t help.

“It’ll be a little different than typical police response because we will have the social work element there so we can do some more in-depth assessment that maybe a law enforcement officer wouldn’t have training in,” said Martin

So, this is how LCAT works: social workers will be teamed up with crisis-intervention-trained officers and the Lansing fire department and they will respond to crisis calls. This can be anything ranging from people experiencing mental health issues to someone dealing with homelessness.

“Step in the right direction I don’t see it getting any better without these teams in place to get out there and spread that word and get them the resources that they need,” said Lansing police chief Ellery Sosbee. “Because not everyone needs a police officer when they call 911.”

Community Mental Health Association is one of the services that would be working with these patients after that initial call is made.

Shana Badgley is a Crisis Clinician at Community Mental Health Association.

“Let’s provide what’s really needed, let’s not scare people or you know put them in the back of a police car,” said Badgley

Badgley said with this program it will help callers experience less traumatizing situations.

LCAT is still working on hiring more social workers and officers to work in this program. It’s expected to launch next year.

Your guide to the best East Lansing-area public libraries

Public libraries are a vital component of any community, offering a variety of services to the public beyond just lending out books.

In the 13 square miles of East Lansing, there are four libraries readily available. From home improvement tools to job searching and tutoring, this area’s public libraries have you covered.

Here’s just a glance at some of the best libraries in the area.

East Lansing Public Library

Students at Michigan State University and Lansing Community College, after a quick student ID verification, can receive a free library card at the East Lansing Public Library, giving them access to a plethora of services.

The East Lansing Public Library also has group and community events, including numerous book clubs and event nights where kids and adults can spend time with experts learning a new craft or improving a pre-existing one.

The East Lansing Public Library will be hosting its annual event, East Lansing Welcomes the World, on Sept. 30, where free food, live music and family-friendly activities are available for people in the community.

In addition, the library’s Maker Studio is home to all sorts of crafting technology including a 3D printer, laser cutters, vinyl cutters and sewing machines available for people of all ages. After patrons complete a usage form and consult with the library’s STEAM education specialist, the printing services can be used.

Further, the library has study rooms available for group and individual study. However, guests are encouraged to reserve a study room to ensure there’s space available.

But if studying at the library isn’t your vibe, the East Lansing Public Library has a book mailing service.

Curbside pickup is available to anyone with a library card, too.

As far as book browsing and checking out books, the East Lansing Public Library has an extensive collection of books at your request. There’s a constantly expanding collection of digital material as well, including audiobooks, ebooks, online learning resources and video streaming services.

The East Lansing Public Library can be reached at (517)-351-2420, is located at 950 Abbot Rd. and is open from 10 am to 9 pm

Michigan State University

East Lansing residents can access the resources available at all nine of MSU’s branch library locations—even if they aren’t students.

The biggest library in MSU’s collection is the Business Library, where individuals have access to a variety of databases to conduct company and industry research or read business articles.

The Main Library is an amalgamation of all its branch locations. From an art library to a multimedia center, the main location provides a multitude of services for both students and the public, including in-person assistance for research and referencing.

The Main Library also offers video game labs that can be reserved, with 11 consoles. Virtual reality (VR) technology is available through reservation, too.

The MakeCentral Makerspace has 3D printing, vinyl, laser cutting and a CNC router, with eight different “makestations” for projects involving button making, soldering and sewing. Appointments must be made in advance, and you can reserve a spot online or by calling the library.

If you’re part of a large group looking to reserve a space, there are multiple rooms and multimedia centers available with whiteboards and technology for presentations, some even having video game consoles and VR technology to utilize.

Support student media!
Please consider donating to The State News and help fund the future of journalism.

Arguably the most useful service for students and other patrons is the range of printing services available, including standard printing and poster printing, along with more extensive services like bookbinding, passport printing and even book design consultation and training.

Michigan State University’s Main Library is located at 366 W Circle Dr. and is open from 8:00 am to 10 pm

Capital Area District Library

The Capital Area District Library, or CADL, has 13 branches, not including a mobile library that travels across the greater Lansing area to provide an assortment of books, media and food packs for people who do not have access to a permanent CADL location.

The CADL serves residents in Ingham County and part of Eaton County.

The CADL’s Okemos location provides individuals with a lot more than just books to check out such as board games, home improvement tools, arts and crafts tools, instruments and passes for CATA services and the Potter Park Zoo. Anyone with a library card can use these services.

Residents of the area may receive a four-year membership card, while non-residents may purchase a membership for either six months or one year. In addition, cardholders get benefits like saving money on tickets to shows at the Wharton Center and select Detroit-area venues.

Job searching and tutoring assistance are also available.

Members can also receive free services from various websites and products. For kids, ABC mouse and Great Courses are available through Kanopy. Adobe services such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro are also available on select computers in the library for anyone to use.

To find the nearest Capital Area District Library to you, visit their website. Hours vary depending on the location.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The City of East Lansing is doing routine flushing of its water system on Monday.

Officials say it’s done to improve and maintain long-term water quality and minimize discoloration.

“The flushing process removes sediment and mineral deposits which naturally begin to build up in the mains over time,” the website said. “The removal is accomplished by “scouring” the mains by running water through them at high velocity and discharging it through fire hydrants.”

The flushing will take place between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm Monday through Friday for around three weeks.

Falls’s program will take place in the area west of Abbot Rd. and south of Wolf Ct., Gainsborough Dr. and Bessemaur Dr. within East Lansing’s City limits.

More areas in East Lansing will have their water systems re-flushed at a future time.

EAST LANSING — In the last two years, David Yang’s family has brought seafood food boils and all-you-can-eat sushi to Delta Township, opening The Tangy Crab in fall 2020 and Ohana Sushi in winter 2021 less than a mile from each other .

Next month, they’ll bring made-to-order stir fry and salad bowls to East Lansing at Fuel’D, a 2,300-square-foot restaurant at 1500 W. Lake Lansing Road that was previously home to Espresso Royale Café, which closed in 2020.

The new eatery is expected to open by early October. He signed a lease on the space in March and has been working on opening Fuel’D since. The restaurant will offer seating for about 40 people and employ between 10 and 15 staff.

At Fuel’D, customers can create their own stir fry and salad bowls. Want wheat or egg noodles instead of brown rice or kale as your stir-fry base? Staff at Fuel’D will build it your way and add whatever proteins, extras or sauces you select. They’ll take the same approach with salads.

Yang aims to make the new eatery a quick, healthy lunch option.

“I want it to be a place where people can grab a quick lunch, and sit down on their lunch breaks, or they can come and do homework at one of the high tops on their laptops,” Yang said.

Made to order stir fry and salads

Yang likes what Fuel’D will offer to the restaurant chain Chipotle’s model, where customers can decide how their burritos and tacos are made.

Fuel'D in the former Expresso Royale location off of West Lake Lansing Road, pictured Monday, Sept 19, 2022. The owners plan to open in October.

Fuel’D was built around offering “an Asian twist,” on the concept, he said. It was inspired by eateries Yang has visited in Chicago and New York City.

“That just really gave me a sense that everybody wants to be healthy,” Yang said. “That’s a new trend in the restaurant business and that’s something I myself personally want to see.”

Customers will be able to order online, at a kiosk inside or at the counter, he said.

“For both (options), you’re going to pick a base, so for the salads you’re going to have a base of arugula, kale, spring mix romaine, farro, quinoa, things like that,” Yang said. “Second step, you can have proteins if you want.”

Fuel’D will roast beef or chicken, tofu, egg and shrimp among its options, he said.

“You can add up to 10 different options inside your salad or stir fry,” Yang said, including broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, nuts, edamame and chickpeas.

Choosing sauces for a stir-fry and dressings for a salad, including garnishes, such as cilantro or sesame seeds, is the final step.

Bowls at Fuel’D will start at $8.25, including a base and three add-ons, but Yang expects most will cost between $10 and $15.

An option the area needs, owner says

East Lansing seemed like the right location for the eatery, Yang said. The location’s proximity to Michigan State University’s campus is ideal.

“There are actually quite a few students who live around the area, too,” Yang said. “I find it to be in a center of Lansing, East Lansing … so I think I want to pull business from both sides.”

Fuel’D offers an option the area needs, he said.

“There aren’t really many healthy stir-fry places,” Yang said. “A lot of Asian restaurants are heavy on oil, heavy on fats, so I wanted to put a different twist on it.”

Lansing Restaurant Owner Named Place After Favorite Stones Album

“Please Allow Me to Introduce…” you to a new spot in East Lansing you should visit, ESPECIALLY if you’re a fan of the Rolling Stones.

One of the most iconic records they ever put out, with “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Street Fighting Man,” and “Stray Cat Blues,” Beggars Banquet is not only an album, but apparently a restaurant in Michigan, too.

Beggar’s Banquet, the restaurant, has been serving the people of Lansing for more than 40 years, which is about 14 years after the restaurant’s namesake album was released.

Beggars Banquet, the album which was released on December 6, 1968, the 9th American album from the British Rock band, The Rolling Stones. It was a huge shift in the band’s sound, changing from their typical psych-pop sound to a more bluesy, “roots” rock format. Nonetheless, it still earned a No. 5 spot in the US and is certified platinum.

Perhaps its the bluesy shift that influenced Bob Adler so much, he named his restaurant in East Lansing after the record, “beggar’s banquet restaurant and saloon.”

The restaurant has featured menu items, but is more known for its rotating craft beers on tap, and big wine list. In fact, the vibe of the place is oddly something that Keith Richards might find appealing, and slip into before a show.

As we all know, Richards is known for popping up in random places while on tour to have a pint, and enjoy the local landscape.

And not just a place for rock stars, Bob once stated in a 2015 interview with the Lansing State Journal, he has no doubt some of the most significant political deals ever made happened at a table in Beggar’s Banquet.

“It wasn’t unusual on a Friday night to walk in and see the governor at the front table, the person he defeated over at another table, and even Congressman Bob Carr, and they’d all be in here. There were a tremendous one mix of faculty and staff and students, judges and attorneys, and legislators and lobbyists that hung out at Beggar’s.”

As for any other connections, or iconography related to the Rolling Stones in the restaurant, it seems that it ends with the name. But, you’re sure to find the “Salt of the Earth” kind of people pulled up to the bar any given day.

“Let’s Drink to the Hard Working People.”

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Grand Ledge Comets (3-1) traveled to take on the Lansing Everett Vikings (2-2).

Second quarterback, Comets up 21-0. Everett QB Beni Davidson rolled right, but is intercepted by Noah McCartney.

That would put Grand Ledge on Everett’s side of the 50.

The Comet’s Shawn Foster fired it down the middle, he found Evan Selby for a nice gain to put the comets inside the red endzone.

Grand Ledge’s Foster bobbled the ball, but hangs on and runs it in for six, that’d make it 28-0.

Grand Ledge shut out the Vikings in the first half 28-0.

That first helped dominance lead the Comets to a 34-6 victory.
