Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra donates supplies to the Ypsilanti Community High School Band

YPSILANTI, me. – The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra recently donated a range of musical accessories to the Ypsilanti Community High School Band.

A2SO said the gift was part of the organization’s “ongoing commitment to support local community and education initiatives.”

A2SO Board Member and Vice President Education and Engagement Jeffrey McKelvey recently met with Ypsilanti Community High School Band Director Scott Hawkins to provide the student band with supplies such as cleaning supplies, reeds, mouthpieces, drum accessories, valve oil and more.

At the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, Hawkins set itself the task of personally providing individual students with instruments so that they could practice and study remotely.

“I am so grateful for the communication and support from the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra,” said Hawkins in a press release. “It’s great to hear from outside organizations working on the welfare of local school music programs. After a global pandemic, there is still a long way to go to put music programs back together.

“The supplies we are receiving will be of great help to our current and future students. I hope that in the future we can build a partnership that guarantees our students in Ypsilanti a fair musical experience. “

McKelvey said music lessons are more important than ever because it’s more than just about learning – it’s about making people feel a certain way.
