7 Adorable & Affordable Date Ideas in the Kalamazoo Area

Whether you’ve been in a relationship for years or are just starting out on a date for yourself and your partner is always a good idea.

But what to do when you run out of money? You don’t want to withhold a night from your significant other, but you don’t want to break the bank either, right? No problem. The Kalamazoo people are behind you.

The question was asked on Reddit,

Sweet, cheap (kind of) date ideas around Kzoo? I’m not the most romantic guy by nature and I try to get ideas for things to do and date in the area. For reference, look out for Raven Cafe in Port Huron, MI. It’s coolest place ever) and outdoor things / opportunities to take photos together.

The original poster already has a number of great ideas for a sweet date night. But these suggestions from the locals can help narrow it down.

Here are at least 7 cute and (relatively) affordable date ideas in the Kalamazoo area:

1. Celery apartments

This one is a little more specific as to when you should go but u / multisensory said

Celery Flats has a number of Christmas decorations along the way for when winter comes. It’s a fun little stroll in the open air.

Also, u / Halostar added that they hold a tree lighting ceremony every year which would also make a cute date.

Aside from the vacation-specific suggestion, Celery Flats is a historic area and, according to their website, the ninth most popular in Kalamazoo. The property includes hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and even an old schoolhouse for you to tour. Read more here.

2. Kalamazoo Candle Company

This suggestion comes from u / dorKONAbike who wrote:

Kalamazoo Candle Company is a great idea, kill two birds with one stone and make a candle for your mother, aunt or grandmother (s) for Christmas!

In terms of affordability, your studio time will cost you $ 15. Once you’ve chosen your scents, there are a variety of candle holders to choose from, ranging from $ 10 to $ 18. But as the comment above suggests, this could be a great way to create a unique gift while also having a unique experience. Please see their website for more information.

3. The Kalamazoo Valley Museum

When it comes to indoor activities, this might be the cheapest as it’s free! And was a suggestion from u / oh_no_another_ban who commented

It’s not outdoor, but the Kalamazoo Museum is fun and free.

Confirmed on their website, general admission to the Kalamazoo Valley Museum is free. However, online pre-registration is required for admission. The available times are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. or 1.30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Read more here.

4. Asylum Lake Preserve

If your goal is to snap cute photos on your date, u / MidwestCPA said:

We just took family photos at Asylum Lake Preserve (Stadium & Drake) and it’s beautiful. The photographer mentioned there are hiking trails around the lake.

The Kalamazoo region is rich in nature trails, nature reserves and parks. All of these can make for a great day. Judging from the pictures, Asylum Lake Preserve seems like the perfect place to get some pictures if that’s your destination. 5. Mason jar plant shop

Proposed by u / PaxAuTelemanus1 they said

You can build your own succulent plant at the Mason Jar Plant Shop. She loved that 🙂 it was very cheap.

Assuming the “she” mentioned in the comment above was the date of the poster, it sounds like this was a successful outing! Mason Jar Plant Shop is located in downtown Kalamazoo and is an independent plant shop. At the terrarium bar you can buy plants directly or create your own terrarium for succulents. For more information, such as contact information and pricing, see their website.

6. Art hop
